From the founding of Cheyney University, the country’s first Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in 1837, to the establishment of the 1890 Land Grant Institutions, HBCU’s have provided Black students educational, social and moral sanctuaries that has educated, nurtured, challenged, trained and motivated students for more than 179 years.  ​
